The Cult of the Sun in the Hebrew Bible
Lipinski says there's no real clear evidence that we have a cult of shamash or shamash, the sun god in the Hebrew Bible. He says though the Aramaic proper name shimashai, which shows up in Ezra 4, 8, 9 and a few other places, could just mean sunny or sunlit shimashi. Lipinski: The lack of evident traces of solar worship in Hebrew seems to indicate that the cult of the sun was not very popular in Syria, Palestine and the Iron Age,. contrary to Egypt and Mesopotamia.
