The Hungry Tide and the Fragile Ports
The story of Henry Pittington is told very well by the novelist Amitav Kosh who tells it both in his novel The Hungry Tide and then more recently in these lectures he did at the University of Chicago. They look into this question of how literature has dealt with the problem of climate change. He suggests that over the over time, human beings had come to sort of cast their dominance over nature in a way that required them not to respect natural forces as much anymore. In Japan, there are to be found in beaches these tablets that say things like do not build your homes below this point.
