The Destruction of the Kakhofka Dam in Ukraine

The destruction of the Kakhofka Dam in southern Ukraine has created an opportunity for Ukrainian historians. Vitaly Shifchenko spent much of his childhood on the banks of the vast reservoir that had been created by the dam. The former bottom of the Kajovka sea is out of bounds for historians because of the war but Ukrainian security forces are also struggling to keep looters out of it. So far the most significant archaeological find made public is a seven-metre-long boat carved from a single tree trunk which is thought to be up to 500 years old.
