The original Super Mario movie with Bob Hoskins that came out in 1993 and John Leguizamo was like one of the biggest like bombs of all time. It really spooked studios and TV networks to make things out of video games. Most importantly, it spooked Nintendo. That was a licensing deal that Nintendo made with Disney where that movie, they had nothing to do with that movie. Getting Nintendo back on board was a years long process for them to be comfortable even putting their characters into another movie. They brought in Illumination which is their animation studio and they have a big track record, they did the Grinch and they've done a bunch of other things and now they felt comfortable
