When Was Pompey Discovered?

Pompey was a fairly large town, so why would the memory of it vanish from the historical record? I don't believe it ever really vanished. And we still get pompey mentioned on sixteenth century maps. They're still in living memory. Maybe people don't know exactly where these places are - but they know within the area.
