Sailors would stuff their hammock in nets along the sides of the ships to try and soak up a bit of enemy fire when it came in. The decks were wetted, covered with water t try and suppress fire. Partitions were moved from the ships down below decks. Officers furniture was removed. Yards were chained up. Those great big spars, the things the sails hang off, they were tied o masts with chains so they were more likely to stay up in battle. Some had scrawled death or victory on a cannon nd.
