There is a kind of language or message that parents are responding to. When information gets produced that's outside of government agencies, often that is perceived as more reliable because it comes from outside existing systems and is therefore seen as independent. Often those studies don't hold up to scientific scrutiny. They might not even they might be retracted from a journal in the way that wakefield's lancet article was when it actually came to be evaluated. And yet, that retraction is frequently perceived as a kind of punishment for speaking truth to power.
