Is There a Lack of Agreement?
Joseph turns to his parents for answers, in that they don't fully agree. His father has a more universalist view of salvation and therefore he didn't agree with any one of the churches. For his mother, better to join any church than no church. He was feeling an answer, and that really left him disconcerted. And i think, whether it's about religion or other things, joseph was feeling very anxious about this division in his family.
