The Algorithmic Application of 230
section 230 was passed as part of the broader communications decency act of the mid 90s. Congress's concern that the internet was becoming a cesspool of pornography and that children in particular were going to be harmed by viewing it. Section 230 does two main things: It tries to encourage companies to moderate or censor or filter however you want to describe it, but also makes sure they won't be held liable for what they don't moderate.
