Is Bicentennial Man a Classic?

Bicentennial man is about a robot with artificial intelligence that gains sentience, self awareness, and consciousness. How would humanity perceive that kind of a machine? Would they extend the idea of personhood to encompass an artificial being? Or would humans dismiss that as unthinkable and refuse to acknowledge that a robot's human like qualities make it a person?
