The History of the San Francisco Mob
Chinese residents were forced from their homes by a mob of 2,000 people. They thought the ship's captain would give them hundreds of free tickets and a show of solidarity. When that turned out not to be the case, they passed around a hat and quickly collected enough funds to pay the way for at least some of their captives. The city guard was sent down to the harbor to protect the immigrants.
