The Mystery of the Eucharistic Visions of the Middle Ages

One of the most common, one of the most frequently recurring miracle stories of the Middle Ages is of eucharistic visions. Visions which in these stories they always regard as horrifying and beg to be taken away from them. I mean, I think that's a theme that runs right through the period from the Middle Ages right up into modernity. The awareness amongst clergy that this is a pastoral problem that they've got to help people who are wrestling with these sorts of doubts is a common theme in the pastoral writing of the period.
