The Origins of Strikes

The 1790s see as much more extreme and often much more violent mutiny is taking place. Traditionally, mutiny was a form of strike - sailors would refuse to go about their business. But this all changes in 1794 when fleet mutinies are organised across fleets. The vast majority of sailors had a degree of literacy at the time. More than half of sailors had the ability to sign their own name at least.
