The Politics of Citizenship in the 20th Century
In 1924, American Indians became universally eligible for US citizenship. There were efforts in that kind of half century of assimilation to bring the vote or the franchise and various enticements of citizenship to native peoples. It is incredibly complex kind of legality to it that would require some understanding that many tribal community members never really aspired to become US citizens. And one of the recurring themes of the 20th century throughout Native America has been an attempt to ensure that the political distinctiveness of Native American communities not be extinguished by these assimilative legal efforts.
