The futility of trench warfare and the combat itself being so purposeless like is that what's resonating with us now help me out why are why are we looking back at this war right now. The movie helps explain why after two brutal world wars and sort of century defining world wars both lost by Germany there's a streak of anti piety and anti charisma that runs through especially the reunited Germany which conducive to a degree of pacifism. To the extent that one remakes a movie like this maybe it should be remade every ten years it's a salutary reminder some other often young and increasingly in the modern world socially and financially disenfranchised person acts as our surrogate you maybe every generation needs
