Do you think there's a fundamental lack of understanding between Western policymakers and what China says and what they want to do? I mean China's basically about wanting an international order shaped in its image. Any idea that there's some faction in China that aspires towards peaceful, like a level playing field rather than a China dominated one is basically fantasy. The problem is even worse on the Chinese side. It's much easier for the Chinese to get information about how Western leaders think. But it's also harder for them to process that information without a strong ideological lens or to even say things that go against the prevailing party narratives.
