What Can You Tell Us About Africa in 1500?
Africa is one of the great unknowns in many respects, also because of this issue of surviving archival records. What can you tell us about the balance of power on the continent in 1500? We just haven't been looking closely enough because we've tended to just freeze out Africa. And I think that that's very specific Western colonial imperial reasons. There's a lot going on that we need to try and understand and put back into that world picture circa 1500.
