Public support and public use of the b b c is quite consistent. There are some incredibly popular and well regarded programmes on air. The other flash point that cn rumble on t the late seventies and the eighties is the reporting of northern ireland. Even if you've got a political class who look at broadcasting, they genuinely believe that to allow paramilatries or s linked with power militaries to speak on air is tantamount to agreeing to what they say on air. That's going to be a problem for a b b c that believes that in order to increase ic understanding of a conflict, it has to reflect and report on the full range of opinion.
