What's the Goal Here?
You don't have to narrow down in year one. You can spread your net wide, feel out loads of different types of people. Do not choose the flatmates you're going to live with in second year or third year in October. Good student accommodation is becoming more competitive now and it's for a lot of the good flats early on. So there is definitely a spectrum between wanting to go early enough to still be able to make a good choice of flatmates but late enough to decide they are arseholes.
