Oscar Wilde was found guilty of gross indecency with other men in 1885. The charges were brought under a law that made such acts misdemeanors, he says. His lawyer tried to get the case thrown out on technical grounds but failed. A retrial led to his friend Ada Levison taking him in when he couldn't find places to stay.
