Was the World Cup a Super Bowl?

England lost 1-0 to USA at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. The defeat was seen as a huge upset, but only for a short time. In some ways, the reaction was fairly muted because international football still didn't mean a great deal in Britain generally and specifically at that time. A few years later, the Hungarian defeat probably made people realise that we aren't the best in the world - so if we want to do something about this, we perhaps need to rethink certain aspects of the game.
