In the Victorian era a neuroscientist called John Hughings Jackson found that people were very fluent in their use of profanity. It's allowed us to unpack the way that language and our emotions are kind of linked together. There is this connection between swearing and emotion and language That is distributed throughout the brain and it's highly resilient to all kinds of other damage. But when people swear, oftentimes it's looked on as well, you should have picked another word but you picked that word because you're deficient in whatever you’re deficient in. Using that word almost has or actually has a therapeutic effect.
