Armies as Backstops for Elections

Rating democracies is a tricky business.  Something makes the Indian Subcontinent different. All of its nations, from the Maldives through Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan have regular elections. Of course the quality of democracy varies, let’s say from Pakistan at the lowest rung to India.
