For much of history, there's been no real alternative to breast milk. That also fed into why breast milk was also seen as a bit squeamish and it's a questionable feminine bodily fluid. And really only in the last 20 years, that real scientific research has looked at what goes into breast milk. It's something that for much of history has been so, so neglected.
