The Opportunity Cost of Getting a College Degree

Most people are not going to be working full time. So we have to figure out, well, what is the value of all those wages you're giving up for those four years while you're in college? Or sometimes five, even six years? Sometimes peopll take five or six years to graduate. And it actually turns out that that opportunity cost is usually going to be more than the cost of tuition. A college degree that's only going to boost your earnings, your lifetime earnings, by a tiny little amount, might not be worth that opportunity cost of spending four years out of the labor force.
