Esther's Plea for Insanity

Esther had finished breastfeeding her youngest child just two weeks before the murders. This led to certain gentlemen of the press saying that women like Esther were literally getting away with murder. Now earlier in the 19th century, women were sometimes executed for killing their children. But by the 1860s, the law and public opinion had moved on. Lots of women who were accused of this crime were now submitting pleas to the courts of insanity. The legal question is not whether such persons as Esther lack are the victims of a homicidal frenzy but whether they can be so influenced by the dread of punishment as to be deterred from the actual murder.
