What we could say, sorry, I messed up is a really nice expression for you to write down and remember. This is interesting because we are taking the emphasis off of us. If maybe the mistake wasn't yours or sometimes you feel like you'll do this kind of stuff that they just don't want to say it was their error. Sometimes people hide behind that tense.
