The presence of nuclear weapons since 1945 has been one of the great themes of modern history. And suddenly, apparently that was no longer so much of a threat. With the collapse of the Cold War, and the end of that tension, I think what happens is that the fear of the future then moves on to other issues. That's when we start worrying about the environment in serious terms - now apocalyptic in its rhetoric.
