The Importance of Endowments in Schools
Many of the schools have been trying to make a concerted effort to showing Congress and the federal government that they are attracting lower income students. Schools like Princeton and Amherst rely on more than half their entire budgets from endowments. But when you look at smaller schools, their endowments are smaller. And they did much better for their returns this year, given that equities were up about 18% in the period.
