The period from the anti-ritus movement in 1957 upped through the Great Leap Forward was not a good time for many. The government turned the entire population on these four pests. Khrushchev came to Beijing in the summer of 1958 and he just went on and on about this whole crazy idea of Mao's. What was happening now was the setup to the horrific famine that was to follow. This was by all accounts from very rational and informed people a recipe for the biggest economic and human disaster and perhaps all of recent Chinese history.
