The Importance of Syllable Structure in Phonics
In many of the languages of Australia, you have a whole bunch of coronal consonants. Because the syllable structure is so restricted, you can use TH to indicate a laminable sound and R-T to indicate a retroflex sound. That's because normal sounds would not normally come together in the course of a normal Australian word. If you have a much more dense, complex syllable structure, then you are going to have to resort to funky diachritics more often. And that's something I didn't think about too much when I was thinking about how to do phonology and all that.
