Peter Murray's new book, Why Empires Fall, looks at the rise and fall of empires. He argues that in order to have an empire fall, there must be a rise first. The Roman Empire was based on control of agricultural land; now it is about location of factories or intellectual capital. But he says colonial exploitation has played a key role in growth of these two empires.
