The Importance of Class Divisions in German Politics
The idea of a classless society was obviously at the centre of the communist regime's ideology. Were class divisions really destroyed or diminished? Not destroyed, I'd say, they still exist at least because of cultural advantages that you just have if you come out from a middle class family. This kind of thing that people call cultural capital is difficult to diminish or to get rid of over time. But working class people for the first time felt that they were actually in the centre of German politics.
