The Origin of the Idea of God

The idea of god as meaning an infinitely intelligent, wise and good being arises from reflecting on the operations of our own mind. Hume helps himself to it. He doesn't know anything more about the origin of that idea than you do. We have no way of knowing whether our less direct, less physical experiences are actually another faculty beyond just the sort of direct sensory experiences that we have. So you could say, yet, these are just figments of our imagination. You could say this is a dimmer kind of perception that we work gradually toward. And hume basically comes down on what helps himself to one version of that.
