Higgs saw a paper that somebody had written er, where they thought t they had been able to get through this problem if you ignored relativity. Higgs immediately knew of a counter example to that. By and large, higgs had ond a mathematical solution to a problem. It had a consequence which seemed to have no relation to the physical world. But now he wanted to work out what would actually happen when you included that in your theory. In getting through the blockage, he found that he had included the effects of the electromagnetic force.
