Nadia Abulohaj is a professor of anthropology at Barnard College and Columbia University. She argues that the culture of troop veneration has its roots in post-Vietnam America. In her book, she says Americans are haunted by Vietnam war trauma as well as American interventionism abroad. "Support the troops" carries with it this entire kind of common sense about citizens obligation towards those who quote unquote volunteered for the military."
