The Importance of Motivated Reasoning

If my income is going to go down as a result of immigration, let's say, then it's relatively easy to convince myself that it's bad for the country. But if for some reason this is something that I will benefit from and presumably more people would benefit than be harmed, then presumably you would have a motivation to believe it's good for the country as a whole. And if that were true, then most good policies that increase the pie would ultimately find more people supporting them - even if they didn't support them for good reasons. So there we have to go back to this point I was making: having a correct political view basically does not change the probability that prevails.
