The Origins of Underground Maps

The first section of the underground opened in 1863. The maps that were produced during that period to help navigate the network were topographical. Gil's map was totally, totally different to anything you see before. He did a whole piece of artwork called By Paying Us Your Penis and he did it in 1914. Frank Pick had wanted to promote the network not only as a place where you could travel quickly from A to B, but also because he wanted to capture the leisure market. But there are some key innovations and things where he was really thinking much further away than anyone else.
