We tend to think of enzymes as the workhorses of the living cell. But they're almost like cities, these big, complex molecular machines that do this chemistry. Here I was with a degree in aerospace engineering having wanted to build rocket ships. And then I looked at enzymes and said, rocket ships are simple compared even to a single enzyme.
