The Role of Lungs in Breathing

Some whale species have in extreme cases, been observed to stay under the surface for hours. It's commonly cited that sperm whales can stay under for 90 minutes while hunting. How do they do this? You might naturally assume the answer is that the whales have bigger lungs. The strange thing is relative to body size, whales have significantly smaller lungs than humans.
