The First President to Be Impeached
On February 22nd 1868 President Johnson tried to evict his Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Stanton refused to leave and barricaded himself in the office for two months. Both moderate and radical Republicans were outraged by Johnson's attempt to remove Stanton. They immediately began preparing for impeachment proceedings. On February 24th the House of Representatives voted to impeach Johnson for high crimes and misdemeanors The vote fell along strict party lines 126 Republicans voted yes 47 Democrats voted no Johnson was the first president in American history to be impeached.
