The History of Calculating Pi
The fact that pie is transcendental was proven in 18 82 by the german mathematician ferdinand von lindman. This actually resolved what was perhaps the longest unsolved problem in the history of mathematics, squaring the circle. The next big break through came from the great indian mathematician, srinavasa rama nugin who created several rapidly converging infinite series. In 19 forty six, pie was calculated to 460 digits by hand, which was the end of hand calculation records. After that, computers started to take over.
