Is There a Causal Link Between Drinking and Intoxication?
There's good evidence that the first domesticated crops were chosen for their psychoactive properties, not for their nutrition properties. So in south america, t the wild ancestor of maize is teos teocinte. Teo cinte makes shitty grain. What it does make is really good beer. And so in that it's got to be the case that hundry gatherers focused on this crop and started get getting it to produce bigger grains and be more productive. But i don't see any real proof or evidence that drinking intoxication led directly to civilization.
