The Priestly Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) announced on Feb 2 2026, that it plans to consecrate new bishops on July 1, 2026, with or without approval from Pope Leo XIV, by appealing to an “objective state of grave necessity.” Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, responded by saying, “Contacts between the Society of Saint Pius X and the Holy See continue, with the aim of avoiding disagreements or unilateral solutions to the issues that have emerged."
