John of gaunt was the third son, i believe, of of edward the third and philippa of haynalt. He spent 20 years trying to claim the throne of castile by right of his wife. Was born shortly before the battle of slus which took place in 13 forty a.m. Aged 16, he won his spurs at cressy, um, and he was shaped to be the future king of england.
