Japanese immigrants were excluded from most occupations, especially that of skilled labor. They entered agriculture because very few farmers cultivated crops that required them to labor close to the ground. There was this belief that their anatomy uniquely suited them to labor intensive agriculture. And on top of that, there were fears that these Japanese gardeners and farmers would take over the land.
