What Does an Airport Really Mean?

In the early days of air travel, little commercial air travel, in the 1920s, why build an airport at all? What does an airport represent for a city, for city elites, city, sort of the people that city leaders, right? Well, I think early on, and we're talking about the 20s and early 30s, you know, the airports represented progress. They represented innovation. They represented an ability to kind of triumph over nature and manipulate the land and the laws of physics or defy the laws of Physics.
