Illich's Career and Training
Illich is the son of a Sephardic Jewish mother and on his father's side he descended from Croatian nobility. He moved from Austria to Croatia, had to flee what was then Yugoslavia because of rising anti-Semitism back to Austria in the 1930s. His life was characterized by exile and mobility, in part because of his Jewish ancestry during the middle 20th century. Illich died in 2002, leaving behind this legacy.
