Wang Jingwei was one of Sun Yat-sense's inner circle, and some felt the most suitable successor to carry Sun's mantle. Zhou had been spending this time moving around, and for the first time beginning to see the possible merits of Mao Zedong's ideas regarding the role of the peasantry. The third attempt at upsetting warlord rule in Shanghai in March 1927 ended in a decisive victory for the Chinese Communist Party forces.
