Britain was somewhat denuded of troops at this point. The reason for striking in 17 forty four, and indeed in 17 forty five, was to take advantage of the fact that a larg number of troops were on the continent. And as a result of them being brought back, the french were able to capture brussels. So marshalsac's capture of brussels netted france about five times more in booty than they actually spent on the jacobite rising. In a way, the rising of forty five replays some of the aspects of the war of the austrians succession.
